Fundraising

A grateful thank you!
We’d like to say a huge thank you to Catherine and Bill Griffiths for their recent donation. Catherine says, “I would usually set aside money to spend at Treasure Fair, and I thought we would still give the same amount to ArtSpring as there is no Treasure Fair this year. I have truly missed the magic and mayhem and look forward to it in some form next year!”

And thanks as well to Pacific Rim Storage Salt Spring for their great service with trying to find a storage solution for us. Treasure Fair donation collections start again in Feb/Mar 2021.

Below you’ll find an encore performance. Last October ArtSpring had the honour to present the Montreal Guitar Trio and the California Guitar Trio. If you were lucky enough to be in the audience you would have been treated to their version of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. With the recent passing of composer Ennio Morricone it is a good time revisit their performance.

ArtSpring Patrons’ Survey

Today – June 29th – is your last chance to complete the survey, which will help us understand more about how our patrons feel about attending events at ArtSpring again.

The COVID-19 crisis is affecting all businesses and organizations throughout Canada, but particularly the cultural sector.  The survey results will be important for ArtSpring to prepare for recovery planning and for a return to live events. We want our patrons to have confidence in the steps we’re taking as we follow the B.C. Public Health guidelines, and to feel safe about coming back to the theatre. We are counting on your valuable collaboration. Please be assured your responses will be anonymous. We do not ask for your name, contact information, or any other information that could identify you. The time required to complete the survey is between 3 and 5 minutes. The link to the survey is:

https://form.simplesurvey.com/f/l/patrons-survey-June2020

The survey will close on June 29th, 2020.

From all the team at ArtSpring, thank you for your contribution.

“Our little printmaking group (part of the SSI Painters Guild) has been hosting virtual studio days over the past couple of months. We sign in with each other at 9.30, check in at lunch, and then share the results at the end of the day. It’s been truly inspiring to be “with” our fellow printmakers and to see what they’ve done.”

Thank you also to Nancy Wigen: “The garden has been the main focus of my time, both flowers and vegetables. I have help for most of the work, which means among other things, human interaction. I also started baking my own bread which is a creative activity, trying different grains etc. All have been edible so far. I’ve also done more reading lately but not much painting.

My home is ideally situated for avoiding loneliness as many people walk their dogs or visit the mailboxes or the Fernwood Wharf here, so there is lots to look at and people to see and talk to as they pass just by me being out in my garden. I do miss family visits, and having people in for tea, but I’m luckier than most people during this pandemic.”

Thank you this week to Chloe Haigh, a grade 11 dance student at GISS:

“I have been dancing for a very long time but the work and art that came out of this weird, uneasy time has been some of the most rewarding. I think I speak for each of my fellow dancers when I say that it has been hard. Trying to find positive inspiration when you are feeling lost and alone was one of the trickiest parts of this term. I am used to finding inspiration in a daily routine where dance is incorporated in a specific time frame. During this time, it never felt like inspiration hit me when I needed it. Having no dance performance, nor a stage to look forward to at the end of the process made finding the inspiration and drive to create something to be proud of even harder. I have missed being in the environment of dance, the studio, the stage, the people. A place where creativity flows through you daily, a place of belonging and love. Though my dance mates and I have both been in places of distress and darkness, it has helped us all find a deeper and more meaningful side to ourselves and our dancing. This has led to beautiful solos from every dance student. I think when we all look back on these days, we will remember the hardships but we will also remember the beauty that came out of them.”

Thank you this week to . . .

Scott Merrick, who says, “I have continued my morning radio show Monday to Friday, doing it all from home. I’ve recorded intros with new lyrics pertaining to the situation. Going for walks nearly every day & posting photos to my Facebook page. And, for fun, have made humorous video clips called “Isolation Activities” and posted them on my Facebook page as well. Lots of cooking, especially with local produce – strawberries & rhubarb! Sadly, the jigsaw puzzle remains neglected.”

Jacky Cooper, who says, “Hi everyone. I’m so lucky to have my horse. I board him in 40 acres, so I’m able to get out and be there everyday – outside in nature, which keeps me grounded. I’m a lucky one.”

Thank you this week to Joy Holland, who says, ” I’ve been following these weekly Collage Jam sessions with Kal Honey. They are very inspiring and creative, and all the women who participate offer a lot during the 1 1/2 hour session Mondays 11:00 to 12:30. Every week there is a theme posted and the class is led by Kal, and his wife reads the comments and questions people write in while we are collaging. At the end you get to post your collage on Facebook, but only for the collage group. The best thing is you can use magazines, flyers, or your used art papers for ripping up and composing. And it’s all FREE.

This Virtual Collage Jam comes via YouTube from their house in Toronto. My friend from Winnipeg has joined in and I get to see what she has created too!
There are always comments about food, travel, gardens, and of course tips on design, use of colour, shapes . . . and it is fun!

From Diana – ” My dad, who is, among other things my favourite human, is staying with my partner and me for a while. He isn’t feeling very well. He struggles with anxiety. He doesn’t sleep much and he has lost too much weight. I feel honoured that he has chosen our home to rest, relax, and try to recuperate.

After 5 days here on Salt Spring, he says he feels better than he has in the last 4 months. What a delightful thing to hear; fingers crossed the trend continues.

We’ve been enjoying the peace and quiet, some yard work, a few heartfelt conversations, card games, books, and good food. We explore the island a little bit too – something I don’t do enough of.

My dad is a writer. He has written a few books and a lot of poetry. I thought I’d share one of his creations, since creating is not my forte.

From Meghan – “Although this time has been strange for me, much of it has also been wonderful (hard to reconcile this when so many are suffering). It’s been challenging having both parents working from home while minding two active children, but I’ve discovered I truly am a homebody, happiest home with my family, exploring nature.

Weekdays are a whirlwind of working, gardening, housekeeping and childminding, complete with virtual meetings, online school learning and video check-ins with friends and family. Weekends take us to new island trails and beaches we may never have discovered were it not for this pandemic. Some days feel like I’m living in a futuristic virtual reality with life lived on a screen, while other days feel more like it’s 1820 – my hands in the soil, bread dough rising in front of the fire, noticing every detail of the changing season. What a world!

For wildlife lovers, my son’s virtual schooling led us to an awesome website to view a variety of animals real time via live cams from around the world. Watch now

Also, here’s a fun take on a pat-a-cake song (sent by my son’s devoted music teacher) that I’ve enjoyed many times with the kids. There’s nothing like beautiful a cappella harmonies and lively rhythm to pick us up when we’re feeling down.” Listen now
