Dear Friends,

The recent announcement from the Public Health Office saying that restrictions will not change appreciably for the next two months does offer some hope and light at the end of this long tunnel. Once again we will reschedule our rental clients and ArtSpring Presents performances. Thank goodness for our mighty team of staff, board, volunteers, patrons, and supporters!

The BC Provincial Health Order of November 19 requiring event cancellations continues until further notice. We hope for some loosening of restrictions by June. Fortunately ArtSpring’s Makana Youth Choir is able to continue under the current order.
As the Province’s vaccine program continues to roll out, here’s is a list of BC Covid-19 Immunization clinics.

Dear Friends,

As we move forward in this challenging time we try to find ways to help. This year has been so hard on many and the performing arts industry has been one of the hardest hit. For touring artists the platform on which they made their living is for the time being gone. Soon we will welcome touring artists back, and provide space for artists to create new work. In the meantime we continue to maintain this wonderful facility for the Salt Spring community. Our mighty team of staff, board, volunteers, patrons, and supporters mean that we will continue to provide arts, culture, and a venue to this community. On the one-year anniversary of the pandemic I am grateful that we are still standing, and standing among friends.

DanceHouse in Vancouver has been presenting a wonderful online season this year. In February I enjoyed their online presentation of Crystal Pite’s Body and Soul for the Paris Opera Ballet (France). DanceHouse has offered ArtSpring 10 free tickets to their upcoming online presentation of Joe by La Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault (Montreal), available March 17-23. The first 10 people to email us at tickets@artspring.ca will get a free ticket to this online presentation. If you aren’t able to get a free ticket you can always support DanceHouse by purchasing a ticket through their website. More about this work below.

Joe – La Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault (Montreal)

One of the most remounted works in Canadian dance, Joe (1984) always evoked varied responses. It can be read as a grim image of human oppression or of herd mentality and conformity. It may also be seen as a tribute to human resilience. More generally, it reflected Perreault’s fascination with the way the environment shapes human behaviour. “For me,” Perreault wrote, “choreography is the expression of space, as dance is the expression of the body.” Read the full article by Toronto Star’s dance critic Michael Crabb here.
Having premiered in 1984 to critical acclaim, the visually arresting work is considered one of the most iconic creations in the Canadian dance canon and showcases the brilliance and scope of Perreault’s vision, as a company of 32 power through a driving commentary on the human condition. Enjoy this archival video in its vintage resolution, which is already 26 years old. The technology may have aged a little, but Joe hasn’t!

Karen Kain

In late 2019 Karen Kain announced her January 2021 retirement as the Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Canada – but then Covid came. She remains at her post and I get the impression that she is the kind of person that just keeps on going when she sees a need. Could someone please nominate her for the position of Canada’s next Governor General?
In the meantime BMO has presented Karen Kain with their inaugural Celebrating Women in the Arts Award. Joan Farlinger sent me the lovely video I’ve included below. Nada Ristich, Head of Community Giving for BMO, sat down with Karen to discuss Karen’s 50-year career in dance, her leadership of the National Ballet, making bold choices, and providing opportunities to today’s artists.

Dear Friends,

Funny how during these times the small things have become so important: a quick note from a loved one, the lengthening of days, and the shyly blooming cherry trees. Joan Blackman commented to me recently that she feels completely “zoomed-out”. That doesn’t show in her recent online concert of Serban Nichifor’s Klezmer Dance which I’ve included in this newsletter. Not a small thing at all but a big bold piece played by an ensemble of women for our enjoyment!

We are so pleased to announce that ArtSpring’s very important yearly fundraiser, Treasure Fair, is in the planning stages for 2021. Difficult as it was for the organization, last year’s Treasure Fair was cancelled due to the pandemic. The plan for 2021 is for an online silent and live auction. The wonderful team of Wendy Herbert and Susan Eide along with the new Treasure Fair Coordinator, Catherine Griffiths, are putting their heads together to devise a successful event that will be both entertaining and profitable!

The Canada Council for the Arts has announced the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts. I enjoyed reading through the artist profiles and looking at some of the winners’ videos and galleries. It is wonderful to see the work that is being created. more>

I thought this sounded really interesting. With no rehearsals, no director, a different actor each night, and a script waiting in a sealed envelope on stage, internationally acclaimed White Rabbit, Red Rabbit, by Iranian writer Nassim Soleimanpour, is an audacious theatrical experiment and a potent reminder of the transgressive and transformative power of theatre. Les Illuminations – Benjamin Britten

Barbara Hannigan sings and conducts l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France performing Les Illuminations by Benjamin Britten. It reminds me when I conducted Messiah and sang the soprano solos. Not an easy feat! it took me three days to come down from the high. Thanks to George Sipos for this suggestion.

Dear Friends,

Often one thing leads to another and you find something you never knew about. I was looking up the music of Chilliwack which of course led to Bill Henderson and a series of great videos called Behind the Vinyl. In one of the videos Bill talks about an early recording of I Believe ….I just LOVE that song! That then led me to check out UHF, another ensemble that Bill participated in. Shari Ulrich was a member of that trio and in the section below I’ve included a beautiful recording she did this past August. The musicians just look like they are having the best time. I then found a fab video of UHF with Shari Ulrich, Bill Henderson, and Roy Forbes Lifting My Heart. I hope it will lift your heart.

UHF – Lifting My Heart

This video of UHF (Ulrich, Henderson, and Forbes) was shot in 1994 by James O’Mara in support of the album UHF II. It was shot on Bowen Island on a hot summer day. The tune was written by Roy Forbes.

Dear Friends,

ArtSpring is honoured to be a recipient of a bequest from the late William James Crawford. Mr Crawford was a longtime patron of ArtSpring, attending some of the very first concerts in early 2000, and he regularly supported ArtSpring through Treasure Fair and Annual Appeal donations.
We are privileged to have been remembered in his will, along with the Salt Spring Library, Lady Minto Hospital Foundation, and Salt Spring Seniors.
Bequests mean so much to non-profit organizations such as ArtSpring. Through his generous gift, Mr Crawford’s legacy will live on and will contribute to the future health of our community arts centre. We send our deepest sympathies to his family.

So here they are! My madeleines! I followed the recipe precisely and though it was a little involved it was not difficult. The result is a beautifully textured and lemony treat! I can imagine making the batter in advance and baking them just before serving dessert with accompanying ice cream. Yummy!
A word of warning, they don’t keep well so making a batch is a bit of a commitment in terms of one’s waistband! recipe>

ArtSpring Newsletter February 1, 2021

We had been hoping otherwise but unfortunately Angela Hewitt will not be joining us this season. Entirely understandable under the circumstances. The good news is that we are already looking at new dates for her in 2022 and 2023. Perhaps we’ll see her two years in a row! The program was to have included a number of pieces by François Couperin, here is Ms. Hewitt from her own living room playing Les Baricades Mistérieuses by Couperin. more>

 
 
 

Jane recommended a wonderful series of podcasts from Pacific Opera. You will see the links a little further down the newsletter. I have only had the chance to listen to the first one so far, but I was so taken with the stories of Artistic Director and Conductor Timothy Vernon; Chorus Master and Associate Conductor Giuseppe (Joey) Pietraroia; and Robert Holliston in this first podcast. I have been fortunate to have met all three of them at various points in my life, starting when I was a student at McGill and including a voice session with Robert Holliston. They are all such generous and interesting musicians.

Since last week I have had no less than seven offers of madeleine pans! I am so touched by all of the generous offers. I promise to test them out soon as possible. My only concerns is that this treat must be eaten immediately as they don’t really keep. Ah well, the sacrifices one must make.

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! Hope you’ve enjoyed the sunshine last week!

Whilst we await the next update from the Provincial Health Officer our staff has been busy in the building. Erin has had her paintbrushes out again to refresh the basement/dressing room area as well as the upstairs admin offices. And thanks to a government accessibility grant we have started a couple of projects – an accessible washroom for the gallery area (see image – first step complete), and next, replacing the original exterior doors with new power-assisted doors. We can’t wait for you to see the improvements. A big thank you to Malcolm and Snazzy Construction for their work on this project.

Last week I mentioned that I was moving on to a new experience with the classic French Madeleines. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find a pan locally yet. The hunt continues. In the meantime I tried a Swedish shortbread recipe and substituted spelt for wheat flour. I actually kind of like it but it does make for a very grainy cookie. It also works nicely with white wheat and red fife. The proportions are 200 g butter, 1 dl sugar, 4.5 dl flour, 1 tsp vanilla sugar. I like the low sugar content.

ArtSpring Newsletter January 18, 2021

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful and restful holiday.

You may have had your fill of Messiah but I’ve had two recommendations for this wonderful Canadian filmed Messiah project called Messiah/Complex. It is a co-production between Against the Grain Theatre and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and is being offered free on YouTube until the end of the month. As I listened and watched, each piece had new relevance because of how this piece was being presented. I hope that if you take the time to watch the video below you will find as it as incredibly moving and artful as I did.

So the fruit cake trials are over. They were smashing, if I do say so myself. I’m moving on to a new experience with the classic French Madeleines. An old High School friend sent me this recipe by David Lebovitz. It looks a bit daunting, but I’m always up for a challenge. I’ll let you know how it goes!
