What are you most looking forward to about the holiday season? For me, it’s a chance to finally get to visit family after two years. COVID safety and travel restrictions have been so challenging for everyone – getting together this year will be really special.

We can also get together with some of the community groups that have been itching to return to ArtSpring to present their holiday shows. Choir groups The Salt Spring Singers, and Viva Chorale! are both here this month – and Viva Chorale! are picking up the mantle of the community sing-a-along with their concert, which is also a fundraiser for our local food bank.

We’re so pleased to have the talented students of the GISS Music program back on stage too with their end-of-year concerts, and Jeffrey Renn brings our ArtSpring Presents shows for 2021 to a close with three opportunities to see part two of his tribute to poet Robert Service.

The ArtSpring staff is taking a break over the holiday season – we are closed from December 18 – January 3. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2022, with increased capacity in the theatre, and many wonderful performing and visual arts events.

Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season from all the team here at ArtSpring.

Who knows where inspiration comes from? I was listening to the CBC the other day, they were interviewing The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger who wrote Light My Fire. Remember that wild piece? Krieger said the instrumental solos were inspired by the chord structure in John Coltrane’s jazz cover of My Favourite Things, and the bass line was inspired by Fats Domino’s Blueberry Hill. Funny how there is this line of connection between such apparently different pieces of music. How do we ever know what we might inspire in others?

One thing we do know is that it will likely happen at ArtSpring in November. Musician Stephen Fearing will be discussing the question of inspiration as part of his one-day songwriting workshop this month (followed by a concert the next night), and the young singers of the Makana Youth Choir will be sharing what they’ve learned this term under the inspirational tutoring of director Caroni Young.
Inspiration from Anishinaabe sky and star stories forms the basis of Trace, a spectacular show from leading contemporary Indigenous dance company Red Sky Performance. And Jeffrey Renn delves into the youthful inspirations of poet Robert Service, in part two of his autobiographical one-man play.

The Salt Spring Forum welcomes an inspirational guest in the field of forest ecology and conservation sciences, Suzanne Simard (already a sold-out event), and DAISSI is inviting you to come along to a Pride and Poetry evening and read a poem that has inspired you. And visual art inspiration? We are rich in new works this month from our island’s talented painters and printmakers.

Finally, a word about current audience capacity at ArtSpring. While we are pleased to hear the province is moving forward to 100% venue capacity, at this time we want to prioritize the comfort and manage the expectations of our existing ticket holders. We know that many of our patrons bought tickets thinking that there would be spacing in place. Therefore, until the end of 2021 all events at ArtSpring will remain at 50% (129 seats). We will continue to assess the situation and will keep you informed of any and all changes planned for 2022.

On behalf of the board Walter Stewart, President of the Island Arts Centre Society (ArtSpring), regrets to announce that Cicela Månsson will be stepping down as the Executive and Artistic Director of ArtSpring at the end of the year.

“Cicela has provided exemplary service and has provided ArtSpring with a solid foundation and an enviable reputation in the arts community, all of which will hugely enable the board’s efforts to recruit her successor. We are deeply grateful to Cicela for her service and all that she has accomplished. Our only regret is that her service could not have continued longer.”

This will be Cicela’s eighth and final season as the Executive and Artistic Director. “I’ve achieved many of the things I set out to do, and now it is time to turn my energies in other directions”, she says. “I have assembled and grown an incredible team who serve the community through their work. Their dedication and professionalism make me so proud. ArtSpring is in very good hands through the staff and the board.”

Cicela is also proud of the Makana youth choir ArtSpring initiated, the expanded artist residencies that give Salt Spring audiences a peek at embryonic artistic work, and last year’s ArtSpring Presents Collaborations In A Time of Covid: Writers and Artists of Salt Spring. Along with these successes, Cicela takes pride that ArtSpring is above all a community arts facility.

During her time at ArtSpring, a professional gallery lighting system was installed, a theatre sound and lighting upgrade was completed, and major accessibility improvements made, totaling over a quarter million dollars in capital investment.

“I am”, she says “particularly grateful to the community for welcoming me to Salt Spring, and their ongoing support of ArtSpring. We are in a very good place: close to the end of COVID, looking at a great number of community bookings for the coming year, and financially healthy. Together we made it through this challenging time and now as a community we move forward.”

The board is commencing a national search for a new Executive and Artistic Director to build upon the existing strengths of ArtSpring. Qualified candidates living on Salt Spring are encouraged to apply. The process for application will be announced soon, with details on the ArtSpring website.

Walter Stewart adds, “Cicela has assembled an extraordinary team of people. The board is deeply aware of the contributions all members of staff make, and we will rely heavily on them as we make the transition to a new leader.”

Dear Friends,

I have no words. I sit in silence. We knew but we turned away. Flags at half-mast, displays of sorrow – what does it mean to the people who were affected and continue to be? I will listen to the stories of First Nations’ people, and try to find meaningful ways to contribute to reconciliation.

Writer Michelle Good has won the Governor General’s Literary Award for English-language fiction this year. Her debut novel, Five Little Indians, follows five teenagers as they leave residential school and strive to find a place of safety in a world that doesn’t want them.
