ArtSpring Newsletter – What’s on November 2021

Who knows where inspiration comes from? I was listening to the CBC the other day, they were interviewing The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger who wrote Light My Fire. Remember that wild piece? Krieger said the instrumental solos were inspired by the chord structure in John Coltrane’s jazz cover of My Favourite Things, and the bass line was inspired by Fats Domino’s Blueberry Hill. Funny how there is this line of connection between such apparently different pieces of music. How do we ever know what we might inspire in others?

One thing we do know is that it will likely happen at ArtSpring in November. Musician Stephen Fearing will be discussing the question of inspiration as part of his one-day songwriting workshop this month (followed by a concert the next night), and the young singers of the Makana Youth Choir will be sharing what they’ve learned this term under the inspirational tutoring of director Caroni Young.
Inspiration from Anishinaabe sky and star stories forms the basis of Trace, a spectacular show from leading contemporary Indigenous dance company Red Sky Performance. And Jeffrey Renn delves into the youthful inspirations of poet Robert Service, in part two of his autobiographical one-man play.

The Salt Spring Forum welcomes an inspirational guest in the field of forest ecology and conservation sciences, Suzanne Simard (already a sold-out event), and DAISSI is inviting you to come along to a Pride and Poetry evening and read a poem that has inspired you. And visual art inspiration? We are rich in new works this month from our island’s talented painters and printmakers.

Finally, a word about current audience capacity at ArtSpring. While we are pleased to hear the province is moving forward to 100% venue capacity, at this time we want to prioritize the comfort and manage the expectations of our existing ticket holders. We know that many of our patrons bought tickets thinking that there would be spacing in place. Therefore, until the end of 2021 all events at ArtSpring will remain at 50% (129 seats). We will continue to assess the situation and will keep you informed of any and all changes planned for 2022.

There is currently no pre-show box office service. All tickets are advance sale only.

All events are subject to change. Refunds, exchanges, or credits will be offered if events are cancelled or rescheduled.

COVID policies and protocols

Your safety is our priority. We are taking all measures to provide a safe, sanitized, and comfortable theatre setting by following current regulations provided by the provincial government, WorkSafeBC, and ActSafeBC. Please see our website for updates to policies and protocols.

Proof of vaccination is required for every patron age 12+ attending an event at ArtSpring. Starting October 24 the Public Health Order requires proof of two vaccinations at least seven days prior to event. Patrons age 19+ are also required to show a piece of valid government photo ID.
