Just 21, Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki has won acclaim for his extraordinary interpretive maturity, distinctive sound, and poetic sensibility. The New York Times has called him “a pianist who makes every note count”. Lisiecki’s insightful interpretations, refined technique, and natural affinity for art give him a musical voice that belies his age.

Jan Lisiecki was born to Polish parents in Canada in 1995. He began piano lessons at the age of five and made his concerto debut four years later, while always rebuffing the label of “child prodigy”. His approach to music is a refreshing combination of dedication, skill, enthusiasm and a realistic perspective on the career of a musician. “I might be lucky to have talent, but it is also about dedication and hard work,” says Jan.

ArtSpring’s dance season opens with one of Canada’s best-known choreographers – Josh Beamish, or MOVETHECOMPANY. This year, ArtSpring is proud to present New-York based Canadian Josh Beamish for two performances in one evening; Thursday October 5 at 7:30 pm; bar opens at 6:30 pm. There will be two dance workshops; Wednesday October 4 and a special workshop for GISS/GISPA students on Thursday October 5.

Saudade, by Josh Beamish, features six male dancers illustrating the human condition of men seeking relationships in today’s technological society. Saudade, a portuguese word describing a love that remains; a constant desire for a reality unlikely to exist – the love and longing after someone leaves. Merging elegant balletic lines with street-style dynamism and drive, the work conjures up fleeting intimacies in a series of ghostly solos, duets, and group passages, accompanied by Hildur Guðnadóttir’s hauntingly beautiful cello score.

Beamish has brought together six outstanding male dancers whose collective credits include leading companies such as Nederlands Dans Theater, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Sasha Waltz & Guests, and La La La Human Steps.

Concerto, by Josh Beamish, is a technically astonishing and articulate choreographic approach to the body in space. In Concerto Beamish has earned the respect and admiration of his peers and critics worldwide for his distinctive and meticulous style as a dancer. Concerto is both created and performed by Beamish to the music of J.S. Bach.

MOVETHECOMPANY was founded by Josh Beamish in 2005 and his works have since extensively toured throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Africa.  Outside of the company, he has created in collaboration with The Royal Ballet, Dutch National/Het Nationale Ballet Junior Company, Cape Town Opera, New York City Ballet Principals Wendy Whelan for Restless Creature and Ashley Bouder for The Ashley Bouder Project, among many more. Josh is the recipient of artistic residencies throughout North America, including the Banff Centre, Jacob’s Pillow and a term as the National Incubator Artist for the American Dance Institute in Washington, DC. He is an alumni of the New York Choreographic Institute, an affiliate organization of New York City Ballet and the School of American Ballet, and a Jerome Robbins Foundation grantee.

On Friday, July 21^st and Saturday, July 22nd, ArtSpring presents the 10^th Annual Salt Spring Chamber Music Festival Concerts: a celebration of one of life’s noblest pursuits – chamber music featuring international guest artists and rising young artists.
