Vision Un-Framed: Painting Outside the Rectangle is a show of Mary Laucks’ latest work appearing in the ArtSpring lobby. Mary’s work is non-representational, visually challenging, and vividly coloured. These new paintings incorporate hard-edge geometrical and curvilinear designs, topographical optical illusions, interacting curvilinear shapes and highly textured surfaces. In these works, Mary explores what effect a non-rectangular shaped support has on the composition of a painting and plays with illusions of three-dimensionality, using both hard-edge geometric designs and textured acrylic media. The shape of the support provides the symmetry of the composition, but these paintings have been freed from the rectangle! Come to ArtSpring and see for yourself!
