Sat Apr 13 | Experience an unforgettable evening performance of Indigenous dance presenting three original choreographies by dancers Beany John (“The Awakening,”) Yvonne Chartrand (“Eagle Spirit,”) and “Carriers & Keepers of the Ancestral Portals” by Beany John and Sophie Dow.
In a recent update to the programming, Friday night will now feature Matriarchs Uprising’s Indigi-Dance on Screen — a collection of evocative Indigenous short dance films, and a wonderful introduction into tonight’s production.
Matriarchs Uprising Festival takes over ArtSpring for an exciting multi-day series of events (April 10-13) that brings together Indigenous female choreographers who are nurturing the art of contemporary dance and weaving stories of transformation. Take part in the artist-led Talking Truths circle conversation and tea social to glean deeper insight into the creative impulses guiding the choreographers. Dive into choreographic workshops for a first-hand experience of movement philosophies and creation methodologies. Witness evening performances showcasing works by Canadian Indigenous female choreographers and stay for intimate post-show artist talkbacks.
Curated by Olivia C. Davies (Anishinaabe-settler), and produced by O.Dela Arts, the festival shines a spotlight on contemporary Indigenous dance artists who are pushing the form forward into the future while presenting multiple platforms for audiences to engage, learn, and witness Indigenous ways of sharing through movement and story-telling.
Show duration: 65 mins with talk back.
