[Eric Daniel Metzgar, USA, 2021, 95 min.]

Nowadays people call it Restorative Justice, but back in the 1980s when the Tagish Tlingit people in the Yukon resuscitated their ancient practice of sitting in a circle, they just called it Peacemaking. It’s now a burgeoning movement that provides viable alternatives to criminal justice systems around the world. This hybrid animated/live-action documentary explores the past, present and future of Peacemaking Circles, and how this ancient practice has been reimagined to keep at-risk youth out of prison. With animation, the film follows a troubled Mexican-American teenager facing four felony charges as he struggles through the program, mentored by a former Cambodian gang leader. With live-action, the film flashes back to the Indigenous origins of peacemaking circles in the Yukon and tracks the winding trajectory that brought this ancient practice from the past to the present.
