Ken Wu is the charismatic former executive director and co-founder of the Ancient Forest Alliance, and has been working to protect ancient forests in BC for more than 25 years. He is a graduate of UBC’s ecological science program and is well known for his hands-on and active approach to environmentalism.
Recently Ken founded the Endangered Ecosystems Alliance with the aim of sustaining native eco-systems in Canada through the science-based protection of these eco-systems and the economies, cultures and policies that affect them. The ultimate goal is to have 50% of all natural areas protected by 2030. Currently that figure sits at 11% and political parties and some environmental groups are aiming for 30% by 2030, when the science suggests 50% is necessary.
We are still seeing extensive clearing on some private lands on Salt Spring and old growth logging is still allowed to run unchecked by an NDP/Green government in BC. If that is happening here then there is a long way to go in a very short time.
