Our organization operates on a modest budget of under $1 million and relies on the dedication of staff and volunteers to sustain our artistic and community-focused initiatives.

Job Summary

The Communications Manager plays a vital role in promoting the mission, programs, and events of ArtSpring. This position is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive communication strategies to engage the local community, increase visibility, and support fundraising efforts. The ideal candidate will be a creative and passionate communicator who can effectively convey our organization’s impact and activities to a broad audience.

As an advocate for ArtSpring, the Communications Manager must have strong communication and interpersonal skills, be a well-organized strategic thinker, and demonstrate adaptability and resilience in a dynamic work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Communications & Marketing Strategy
  • Develop and implement integrated marketing and communications strategies for ArtSpring Presents performances, programs, and organizational initiatives. 
  • Create and review the annual marketing strategy with awareness of organizational capacity and peak workload periods.
  • Ensure branding is consistent across all platforms.
  • Translate organizational priorities and artistic programming into clear, engaging public communications.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director, Artistic Programmer, and staff to align messaging with artistic intent and audience goals and ensure communications occur in a timely manner.
  • Cultivate relationships with local media outlets, prepare press releases, and coordinate interviews or coverage of ArtSpring events and initiatives.
  • Create and distribute the monthly newsletter at least one week before the end of each month.
  • Lead strategy and messaging for all charitable initiatives (Such as: Annual Appeal, Treasure fair)
  • Assisting the administration team as needed during low staff periods (Such as: vacation & illness)
  • Managing the annual marketing budget
  1. Community Collaboration & Rental Client Marketing Support
  • Support rental clients with the marketing of their events at ArtSpring.
  • Provide guidance and suggestions on effective ways to promote events on Salt Spring Island.
  • Cross-promote rental events through ArtSpring communication channels, including newsletters, social media, and the website when appropriate.
  • Manage rental client event listings and related marketing assets across ArtSpring platforms.
  1. Audience Engagement & Analysis
  • Lead audience engagement strategies focused on acquisition, retention, and deepening relationships with existing audiences.
  • Analyze audience data and trends using Spektrix and other tools to inform marketing decisions and campaign effectiveness.
  • Develop targeted campaigns based on audience segmentation and behaviour.
  • Track, evaluate, and report on marketing and engagement outcomes upon request.
  1. CRM Management (Spektrix)
  • Serve as the primary staff lead for Spektrix in relation to marketing and audience data.
  • Ensure accurate data entry, maintenance, and retrieval to support campaigns and reporting.
  • Build and manage mailing lists, audience segments, and campaign tracking.
  • Collaborate with Box Office and Finance staff to ensure data integrity and effective system use.
  • Lead the transition from Constant Contact to dotdigital (email marketing platform).
  1. Digital Marketing & Social Media
  • Develop and manage ArtSpring’s social media strategy, including content planning, creation, posting, and engagement across multiple platforms.
  • Increase audience reach and engagement through strong storytelling, visuals, and video content.
  • Coordinate digital advertising and promotional campaigns as needed.
  • Monitor performance metrics and adjust strategies accordingly.
  1. Website Management & Digital Platforms
  • Lead the design and development of a new website in collaboration with the administrative team.
  • Maintain and regularly update ArtSpring’s website with timely, accurate, and engaging content.
  • Maintain website SEO and GEO performance.
  • Ensure the website is user-friendly, accessible, and visually aligned with ArtSpring’s brand standards.
  • Coordinate with internal staff and external contractors (designers, developers) on website updates and improvements.
  • Monitor website analytics and user behaviour to improve navigation, content effectiveness, and conversions (ticket sales, donations, sign-ups).
  • Ensure strong integration between the website, Spektrix, email marketing (dotdigital), and social media platforms.
  • Maintain marketing-related sections of internal digital systems (e.g., Dropbox, Google Workspace, Slab).
  1. Design & Collateral Coordination
  • Work closely with ArtSpring’s contract designer to plan and deliver all marketing collateral, including season brochures, show materials, and digital assets.
  • Provide clear briefs, timelines, and content direction to ensure materials support marketing objectives.
  • Create in-house materials as needed (e.g., signage, memos, reports).
  • Review and approve materials to ensure quality, consistency, and alignment with brand standards.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in arts marketing, communications, or audience engagement.
  • Strong proficiency with CRM systems; experience with Spektrix and dotdigital is a significant asset.
  • Proven ability to analyze data and translate insights into effective marketing strategies.
  • Strong digital and social media skills, including content creation and performance analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Understanding of basic design principles.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field and/or equivalent experience in communications/marketing.
  • Competence in WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace.
