Tim Brook, who lives on Salt Spring, is a professor at UBC and a world authority on Chinese history, especially of the Ming period in the 17th and 18th centuries. You may recall his earlier book VERMEER’S HAT, which became a best-seller about a dozen years ago. His new book is a big one, looking at episodes and characters in Chinese history from Khubilai Khan’s Mongol empire through to Mao, and indeed including the present day.
The book launch will have somewhat the shape of a Forum duscyssuib, with Tim Brook not only reading short passages from the book but having a discussion about it with George Sipos, who happened to be his editor on the book. There will also be opportunities for questions from the audience, who may will want some light shed on the present mindset and ambitions of this huge and important country.
Salt Spring Books will have copies of GREAT STATE available for purchase and signing. You might even expect some refreshments.
