The Salt Spring Forum proudly presents Joe Arvay, Q.C., one of Canada’s most tireless civil rights and human rights lawyers, for an inspiring discussion about civil liberties – including the upcoming decision of the Supreme Court of Canada on the “right to die”.
Joe Arvay has worked on many landmark constitutional law cases in defence of human rights and civil liberties in B.C. and the rest of Canada. He contributed to the Supreme Court of Canada decision establishing that sexual orientation is a protected ground of discrimination. He later served in the case that struck down the laws preventing same-sex marriage in Canada. He represented the Insite safe injection site, which established the right of addicts to supervised injection. He was part of the team in the aboriginal title case involving the Tsilhqot’in Nation (and recent Forum guest Chief Roger William) that led to the Supreme Court’s monumental decision this past June. And he was the lead counsel working to have the Supreme Court recognise a constitutional right to physician-assisted dying.
