This class continues to focus on vocal technique and sound productions but with an added emphasis on developing skills to sing in harmony and to create a beautiful ensemble sound. More emphasis is placed on understanding and reading written music notation. The repertoire is a mix of genres and styles and introductions to a broad range of choral music and composers. The term will culminate in a final concert at ArtSpring with the Makana Kids choir.
Director – Caroni Young
Caroni Young is an active choral director on both Salt Spring Island and Vancouver. She is a trained music educator and recently completed a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting at UBC. She is the artistic director of Viva Chorale, and adult community choir on Salt Spring and in addition to her work with the Makana Youth Choirs she directs three choirs with the Vancouver Youth Choir family of choirs. Caroni is an Elementary Music specialist with the Vancouver School Board. Caroni also teaches undergraduate conducting at Capilano University.
Accompanists:
Jennifer Howard: Jennifer has been playing the piano since age 8, starting with group lessons in West Vancouver with Edwina Weight. She studied music at UVic and graduated from UBC with a BA in Music. Jennifer started teaching piano when her first child was three months old, and has taught ever since (with a few interruptions, like babies and family moves!) Her first accompanying gig was with the Salt Spring Singers and continued for 11 years. She also accompanied the SSI children’s “Honour Choir”, founded and directed by late husband Mitch Howard, for seven years. Stepping into Makana with Caroni Young in 2021 has been a joy. Jennifer sang in many choirs over the years before taking up the accompanist’s bench!
Shirley Bunyan: Shirley has been a professional musician for many years, teaching piano, organ, theory, history and harmony. She divides her time between church, school, and the wider community, and has enjoyed working with choirs at every level. As an accompanist, she is the proud holder of the Joyce O. McGuire provincial award for choral accompanying. Working for the last few years with the young singers of Makana has been a pleasure.
