Greg Klassen‘s exhibit Mu (Liminal Spaces) is one of three projects where he worked with his favourite model, his youngest child Morgan. “Mu” relates to that intangible space ‘between’, between here and there, between you and me, between the inner and outer ‘me’.
Here is what Greg writes about the exhibit:
Like the rest of us, our children face profound issues regarding our sense of identity. Unlike most of us (adults), children have an incredible knack for exploring those issues openly and honestly. Although we were not entirely sure where our joint exploration would take us in this project, it was clear from the outset that it had to involve the exploration – and visualization – of the profound sense of inner duality that we all tend to feel when we confront identity issues.
In this series we chose to explore this sense both literally and metaphorically through the use of double/multiple exposures. Each image thus involved – again, both literally and metaphorically – the ‘composition’ of questions of identity. One surprise, for me at least, was that although this expression of questioning identity focused on my model, they resonated deeply within me as well. Our hope is that you will find as much challenge, frustration, and satisfaction in interacting with these images as we found in making them.
The opening reception takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 16 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
