East Meets West is a coastal landscape series of oil paintings celebrating both my Nova Scotia roots and my migration to Salt Spring Island 5 years ago. Inspired by the similarities and contrasts of each coast, this series is a melody honouring 7 of my favourite natural symbols representing joy, freedom, and abundance: the sun, ocean, rainbows, mountains, trees, flowers and birds.

Having grown up living on the shores of the Kapuskasing River as it moved powerfully into James Bay, my connection to the land and the water is primary in my being. I’m a figurative artist who paints experiences in our lives, capturing those magical moments where we are immersed in our passion for attuning with nature.

The Guardians

My original training at NSCAD University (Halifax, NS) in 1994 was in photography and figure drawing, which I now use as tools and references to paint from. A pivotal moment led me to teach myself to paint in early 2003; I was instantly hooked! I had my first solo show later that year. In 2006 I was offered the position of Art Teacher at Bedford Academy (NS), a P-8 private elementary school, followed by many years of other teaching opportunities. I opened Ocean Art Studio in 2011, and have been teaching private lessons and workshops to children and adults ever since. Every patron age 12+ is required to show proof of full vaccination. Patrons age 19+ are also required to show a piece of valid government photo ID. Face masks are mandatory at all times. Masks are available but please try to bring your own.
