Along with lots of good music, we’ll explore art and architecture, peasant life and high society, famine and plague, and plenty of strange goings-on. You’ll even find out why and when the Parisians had Le Civet de Kangarou and Le Chat flanqué de Rats on the menu. You’ll learn a bit about changing form and structure in music, and why that happened, but no special musical knowledge is necessary. One lucky patron will have his or her full registration fee returned in gift certificates to ArtSpring events.

Six Sunday afternoons, 1:30 to 4:00, from January 22 to February 26, 2012 in the Theatre at ArtSpring.

$50 per person, $80 per couple. Tea will be served, but not kangaroo. All proceeds go to ArtSpring.

She is a superb pianist, silver medalist at the 2005 Van Cliburn International Competition, and 2010 Avery Fisher Career Grant winner, one of the most prestigious prizes in classical music. More importantly, she charmed us all with her superb technique and captivating stage presence. Joyce will perform in February with the Vancouver Symphony and we have taken the opportunity to kidnap her back to Salt Spring for a recital of her choice.

After just returning from regionals the Saltspring Island improv teams are exited to explode on their home stage with a night of hilarity, entertainment, and specifically random scenes and theatre sports. The GISS senior team will also be performing and recording 4 consecutive scenes to enter into the wild card online video tournament. The revenue is also a fundraiser to help the teams pay for the cost of the regional tournament as well as helping the winning team of our region go to Ottawa. But last but not least, we’ll be playing everyone’s favorite game: What’s in the Box? Four Saltspring Island improv teams will be participating, from all grades at GISS, as well as students at SIMS. All teams have been practicing furiously and are ready to slam down scenes from audience suggestions.

The play weaves together two stories. In the first, which is based on the true story of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl discovers that she has radiation-induced leukemia nine years after the bombing of Hiroshima. Determined to live, she folds origami cranes, which are a symbol of hope. The second story is about Buddy, a Canadian boy who is afraid of nuclear war and thinks there’s nothing he can do to stop it.

No one wants to talk about it save her replacement, Bachir Lazhar, an Algerian immigrant seeking political asylum. With great sensitivity and humor, Monsieur Lazhar follows a humble man who is ready to overcome his own loss in order to accompany children beyond the silence and taboo of death. Exquisitely acted by Fellag and a group of extraordinarily talented children,Monsieur Lazhar was named Best Canadian Feature Film at the Toronto International Film Festival and is Canada’s entry for Best Foreign Film in the Oscars.
