SUMMARY:Out of the Blue: An Evening with Jan Wong
DESCRIPTION: More than 1 in 10 Canadians will experience a serious depression in the course of their lives. On May 20 the Salt Spring Forum will host a conversation about a mental illness that affects many of us\, but is rarely talked about. For twenty years\, Jan Wong had been one of the Globe and Mail's best-known reporters. Then one day she turned in a story that set off a firestorm of controversy\, including death threats\, a unanimous denunciation by Parliament and a rebuke by her own newspaper. For the first time in her professional life\, Wong fell into a severe clinical depression. Yet she resisted the diagnosis\, refusing to believe she had a mental illness. As it turned out\, so did her company and insurer. Her new book Out of the Blue tells the story of her workplace-caused depression\, her redemption\, recovery\, and yes\, happiness. On Sunday\, May 20 at 7:30pm please join Jan Wong for a community discussion about depression that delves into how the illness impacts friendships\, families\, and workplaces - and how it is dealt with in our society.

SUMMARY:Life After Growth: Richard Heinberg
DESCRIPTION:Richard Heinbergs latest book\, The End of Growth: Adapting to our New Economic Reality\, proposes a startling diagnosis: humanity has reached a fundamental turning point in our economic history. The expansionary trajectory of industrial civilization is colliding with non-negotiable natural limits. Richard Heinberg’s book goes to the heart of the ongoing financial crisis\, explaining how and why it occurred\, and what we must do to avert the worst potential outcomes. It shows why growth is being blocked by three factors: Resource depletion\, environmental impacts and crushing levels of debt. These converging limits will force us to re-evaluate cherished economic theories and to reinvent money and commerce. What makes this a perfect Transition Salt Spring event is\, The End of Growth describes what policymakers\, communities\, and families can do to build a new economy that operates within Earth’s budget of energy and resources. We can thrive during the transition if we set goals that promote human and environmental well-being\, rather than continuing to pursue the now-unattainable prize of ever-expanding GDP. And the good new is\, acting locally is a large part of the solution. In the coming years we can still thrive – if we maximize happiness rather than the pursuit of growth at any cost. Author of ten books\, including The Party’s Over\, Peak Everything\, Richard Heinberg is widely regarded as one of the world’s most effective communicators of the urgent need to transition away from fossil fuels and Peak Oil. Richard is Senior Fellow-in-Residence at the Post Carbon Institute\, is a much sought-after speaker and has presented in dozens of countries. He’s featured in many documentaries\, including End of Suburbia and Leonardo DiCaprio’s film 11th Hour. Richard has appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America\, Canadian Broadcasting Television\, and BBC\, as well as numerous radio programs (national NPR) and print publications (Time magazine). Lucky for all of us\, Richard is coming to Salt Spring via live webcast on January 26th\, at ArtSpring (where you can purchase your ticket) 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm. This event is being sponsored by Transition Salt Spring and co-sponsored by SSI Conservancy and Forum. Jean Gelwicks – Transition Salt Spring 537-4859 in case you have any questions

SUMMARY:Bach on the Rock: Sing Along Messiah
DESCRIPTION:A new Salt Spring Christmas tradition\, based on a centuries old musical tradition\, begins this year\, 2011\, on December 18th at 2:00 at ArtSpring. Bach on the Rock\, under the direction of its music director Jim Stubbs\, will proudly present Handel's glorious Messiah! This is a SING ALONG presentation where you\, the audience\, will be accompanied by the Salt Spring Chamber Orchestra and Choir in this magnificent work. Jim Stubbs and the Salt Spring Chamber Orchestra and Choir are thrilled to bring this first annual Messiah Sing Along to ArtSpring. The Messiah premiered in Dublin on April 13\, 1742\, and was a resounding success. By the end of the decade it was established as one of the greatest oratorios of all time. Using a script by Charles Jennens\, Handel was almost immediately infused with an insatiable energy and vision. Handel completed the oratorio in 25-28 days and when he finished the Hallelujah chorus\, he told his servant: "I did think I did see all heaven before me\, and the Great God himself." Many audience members already know the melodies to the famous chorus numbers such as "And the glory of the Lord"\, For unto us a child is born"\, "Glory to God"\, "Hallelujah" and "Worthy is the Lamb"; words will be provided with your programs. For those that wish to read from the score\, there will be a limited number of Messiah scores\, Wilkins Shaw edition\, available at the door for purchase at $15.00 or rent for a deposit of $15. The deposit will be returned in full at the end of the performance upon the return of the score. Don't miss out on this community musical event! Be part of the Salt Spring Sing Along Messiah and join the members of the Salt Spring Chamber Choir. Let the sounds of the Salt Spring Chamber Orchestra surround and accompany you as we all create an island Messiah.

SUMMARY:Oil for the Lamps
DESCRIPTION:The Original Light Opera - The world premiere of Oil for the Lamps\, a Chanukah Folk Opera\, will light up the stage at ArtSpring\, Salt Spring Island's Centre for the Arts\, on Tuesday and Wednesday\, December 13 and 14.The performance is packed with surprises and not only tells the story of one holiday in one tradition\, but relates the universal theme of the importance of Light in times of Darkness in many other cultures. A brand-new production\, its lively score and lyrics the work of composer-librettist Joi Freed-Garrod\, the opera highlights eight different aspects of the holiday\, one for each night. With Tevye and his family telling the ancient history of Chanukah\, the loosely constructed storyline follows the tale of Fiddler on the Roof AFTER the family leaves Anatevka. They take the audience from 1906 to the present\, from Russia to North America. The inter-generational cast\, drawn from Salt Spring Island's dynamic arts community\, dance\, act and sing the emigrant experience as the soft glow of each successive candle builds towards the eighth night. Freed-Garrod explains that folk opera brings together folk music\, which tells stories of the people in song\, with the formal\, musical-dramatic structure of opera. Directed by Rachel Jacobson\, with costume and stage design by Lynda Jensen\, evening performances begin at 7:30\, preceded\, beginning at 6:30\, by Latkah Tasting and Dreydl Spinning in the ArtSpring lobby. At just one hour long\, the show is appropriate for everyone including the younger set. There will be a schools-only show on the morning of Dec. 14 as well. Background information is available for parents and educators on request (please e-mail Joi at jfreed@tru.ca mailto:jfreed@tru.ca). Donations are gratefully accepted to help with production costs.
SUMMARY:Bob McDonald on the Remarkable Planet
DESCRIPTION:SSI Conservancy Annual Fundraiser - Planet Remarkable. As planets go\, the Earth is a small rock\, surrounded by a thin bubble of air and a thinner film of water. It is also a place of abundant life - a remarkable ecosystem that seems\, as far as we can tell so far\, to be unique in an incredibly hostile universe. On Sunday\, November 13\, CBC's host of Quirks and Quarks\, Bob McDonald will explore the science behind our remarkable planet through an exciting illustrated presentation at ArtSpring. The event is a fundraiser for the Salt Spring Conservancy. The activities begin at 2:00 pm with a silent auction viewing and refreshments. The presentation begins at 3:00 pm. In addition to hosting Quirks and Quarks\, McDonald is a popular science author and journalist\, and has been recognized with several honorary degrees\, and recently\, the Order of Canada. Don't miss this fascinating opportunity to meet Bob\, support the Conservancy's work\, and bid on some fantastic offerings donated to the silent auction.
