Building on recent work that combined images of First Nations elders with local scenes on Vancouver Island, David Baughan‘s new images from Hawaii combine petroglyphs and other original artwork from the original Kanaka Maoli peoples. Here is what David says about his exhibit Island Paradise:
“Here we still struggle with respect for Aboriginal cultures and land ownership; whereas, we could learn from how similar issues have been more carefully and honourably resolved in Hawaii. As part of the show I have also included minimalist colour photographs of lava both from recent and ancient flows. The islands that make up the state of Hawaii are merely the top sections of volcanoes, both active and presently passive. The outpourings of lava from the volcanoes are both destructive and creative. In an active lava flow everything in its path is destroyed but over the years the lava turns into incredibly rich and fertile soil. Thus from death new life is formed.”
*Please note the lobby show is open weekdays only.
