Mariangela Vacatello is one if Italy’s brightest musical stars. When she visits ArtSpring on Saturday evening she will perform an all-Liszt programme including the huge Sonata in B minor – Liszt’s vision of the whole of human existence. You may recall Marcus Groh playing this work in our 2007-08 concert season. If you do you will remember it to be an extraordinary musical journey. Ms Vacatello will also play five or Liszt’s twelve Transcendental Etudes.

It may be summer and light-hearted barbecue time, but don’t miss this opportunity to hear one of Europe’s most exciting pianists play important music from the greatest master of the Romantic piano.

The concert starts at 8:00pm and tickets are available on-line or through the ArtSpring Box Office.

Friday, July 15 8:00pm
Friday at 8:00 we get to hear one of the best folk bands in the United Kingdom. The Urban Folk Quartet has been wowing audiences on the other side of the Atlantic with their lively and original music from the four corners of the world, but with a strong Celtic influence. This is their first North
American tour, and they’re great.

Tickets are $17.50* ($5 for youth) though you can get a discount if you buy tickets to some of our other summer programmes at the same time.

Both these programmes coincide with the ArtSpring Treasure Fair, so you can bid on the ormolu chamber pot during the intermission.

Here we are at one of life’s great crossroads. Game seven of the Stanley Cup playoffs starts at 5:00pm on Wednesday, and the Hailey Niswanger Quartet is scheduled to play at ArtSpring at 8:00.

As if life weren’t difficult enough as it is, now you have to choose between the collective catharsis of hockey’s greatest moment, and the appeal of personal imagination and sensibility in the form of four brilliant young musicians. No wonder people become hermits.

But we are Canadians, after all, and we love compromise even more than hockey. So here’s what we’ll do: We’ll delay the start of the concert to 8:45pm. This should give the gods a chance to decide the fate of Lord Stanley’s cup and still give you time to come to ArtSpring. When you get here, we’ll either rejoice or grieve together. After all, that’s somewhat what jazz is about, isn’t it?

So if you already have a ticket, come 45 minutes later than what your ticket says. If you don’t, just come to the door before 8:45 and the Box Office will be waiting for you.

George
